Let me tell how impressed I am with the effort invested and the accomplishment. But I also want to note ,as John and others have done, that this excellent precedent required significant time and effort (absolutely not criticism is implied, ate the contrary). On a long term basis if we want to replicate this "permission" process we must find a lighter process.

I agree with John's analysis.

Phil,

Somehow, I don’t necessarily think it may be a good idea to post, but could be convinced otherwise.  I don’t want to keep a quasi-public trail of the legal history and imply a precedent for all our software, when fair use may more generally apply.  Others seeing it may conclude that this is the only way to go, although it certainly shows our (your) due diligence.   We simply don’t know where it’s going.  If you wanted to encourage others to follow, you could always do that one on one.  However, the overhead for this one piece of software is frightening.

John,

Thanks for your help with this.  It's great to have one piece of the legal firmly in place and nailed down.  Hopefully, we'll be able to use this as leverage at both Boeing and MCI/Verizon.  Would you have any issue with our adding the PDF of this letter to NLS/Augment restoration site document archives?  At present, the site is available only to SCC members and close friends (e.g. Henry Lowood).
